APPLE TREE ROOTSTOCKS
Over a century of evolution
For over a century, fruit growing professionals around the world have worked to improve the performance of varieties used as rootstocks.
Europe, for a long time the leader in this field, popularised the dwarfing rootstock selections created by the East Mailling centre in England, including the famous M9, which was subsequently used throughout the world.
In recent years, however, changes in growing techniques, social expectations and the climate have highlighted the limitations of traditional rootstocks.
The need for new selections that are resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses while still achieving a high level of productivity quickly became apparent.
It is in this context that, some thirty years ago, we began introducing and testing new rootstocks created by Cornell University at the Geneva station in New York State, USA.
Thanks to their unique combination of resistance and productivity, nearly 20 million Geneva® rootstocks have been used to date across Europe to establish better-performing, more resilient orchards.
